What is the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Program?
Becoming an Outdoors-Woman, or BOW, is a three-day workshop designed for women ages 18 years or older. The workshop offers hands-on instruction in a fun and non-threatening learning environment. Participants choose from over 50 courses such as backyard wildlife, rock climbing, camp cooking, map and compass, camping, mountain biking, shooting sports (pistol, rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader, as well as gun safety), fishing, hunting, canoeing, nature photography, archery, ATV handling, bird watching, motor boat handling, and more.
This workshop is for you if . . .
- You have never tried these activities but have hoped for an opportunity to learn.
- You are a beginner who hopes to improve your skills.
- You already do some of these activities but would like to learn some new on.
- You enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded individuals.
When is BOW?
The workshop is held twice a year, the first full Friday-Sunday in March and October.
Where is BOW held?
Becoming an Outdoors-Woman is held twice each year at the Alabama 4H Center near Columbiana in Shelby County. The spring workshop is held the first full weekend of March and the fall workshop is held the first full weekend of October.
How Much Does BOW Cost?
The cost for the weekend adventure is $275 and covers meals, lodging, program materials and instruction. All instructional equipment is provided.
What is Beyond BOW?
Like BOW, the Beyond BOW events offer hands-on instruction in a fun and non-threatening learning environment. Beyond BOW, as the name implies, takes you beyond, or to the next level, as you strive to sharpen your skills. While it is not required that you’ve attended a BOW Workshop, it is recommended. Beyond BOWs may take place in one day or occur over a weekend in different parts of the beautiful state of Alabama.
BOW and Beyond BOW offerings are made possible by a cooperative effort between the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and our foundation, the Alabama Conservation and Natural Resources Foundation, Inc.
